I’m going on a long flight pretty soon and I have a handheld Garmin GPS. I’d like to use it to see where I am, how fast we’re going, stuff like that. Is it safe to turn a GPS on when flying? What about during takeoff and landing?

What is Geocaching

Geocaching is a global game using a GPS to find hidden ‘treasure’ that can be anywhere in the world. You can also hide a geocaches somewhere for others to find, placing in it whatever you desire. You have to record the co-ordinates and upload them to a website to make it possible for the searchers to find them.

Your geocaches can be any size from a big bucket to a tiny film canister with just a tiny roll of paper for the log. Event geocache is a popular version of the game and is played at an event, with the geocaches only in operation for the day. The treasure consists of a logbook and a few trinkets of little value. The idea is to find the treasure and then replace it for others to find after you’ve written in the logbook. There are 100 countries worldwide with geocaches and 800,000 are registered on websites devoted to this game.

Finders who want to play the game go to a website and take down all the details of their choice of geocaches. They use a handheld GPS to find it, then write of their exploits in the logbook. They may take some of the treasure only if they leave something similar in its place. Some geocaches contain unusual coins, buttons, food, software, books or videos. They are, of course, waterproof.
