What is GPS?
Answered By Editor
GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning
System. This is a system that uses the aid of
satellites which orbit the Earth. Currently,
there are 24 satellites that orbit the Earth.
These satellites transmit signals to the
Earth and are received by GPS receivers.
The GPS was originally intended for the use
of the military. However, in 1980, the
government made it available for use by the
civilians. Modern sea vessels now use GPS to
accurately know their position while at sea.
Travelers also make use of GPS receivers to
monitor weather conditions, traffic updates,
navigate directions, etc.
